In Florence there stands (correct me if I'm wrong) the finest of all examples of this, the Mercato Centrale, pictured above. Some in Columbia are fixing to replicate this phenomenon on the grounds of the Columbia Farmer's Market. It's called the Farmers Market Pavilion, and the big kickoff is Saturday, July 26th. Fundraising is under way, but when finished the pavilion will offer
a resource available to the entire community. Built through a public/private partnership, it will continue to house the Columbia Farmers Market and be programmed by Columbia Parks & Recreation whenever the market is not in session.

I think this would be a greatly positive thing for Columbia and that the community should realize what an excellent resource the Columbia Farmer's Market brings to the table, so to speak.
Mercado Central is wonderful! Even have the handbag I purchased from an Egyptian student studying in Florence --- but I digress.
My dad and I shared fresh buffalo mozzarella, hot Italian bread and a tazze of espresso one early morning. OK, he also lit a cigarette after our feast and that tang of tobacco aroma encircling our ad hoc picnic leftovers still resonates in my memory. But I digress......
I think the enclosed Farmer's Market in Columbia will be an extraordinary asset to the community and to food enthusiasts!
